Tiptoe through the 2m tulips
THE second annual tulip festival at Daning Lingshi Park in Jing’an District gets under way on Saturday.
This year’s event, which runs until April 10, will feature about 2.1 million individual plants all from the Netherlands, the home of the tulip — in more than 50 varieties, the park said yesterday in a press release.
The duration of the festival is almost twice what it was last year, while the number of plants on display has almost tripled.
For their 20 yuan (US$3) entrance fee, visitors will be able to wander through six display areas, each with a Dutch theme — so expect lots of windmills, herds of fake Friesians and oversized clogs.
For anyone worried about experiencing tulip overload, some of the displays will also feature hyacinths, the press release said.
After the success of last year’s event — the busiest day saw 196,000 visitors — public safety has been made a priority, said Hong Mingming, an official with the district’s tourism administration.
“The popularity of last year’s event took us by surprise, so the security preparations will be better this year,” he said.
People should try to avoid peak times, and check the park’s official Weibo and WeChat accounts for updates, he said.
All visitors will be required to pass through security checks prior to entry and gates will be closed if the crowds get too large, he said.
