To serve and protect... in Italy
SA Yiming, the first policeman from Shanghai to patrol the streets of Milan, Italy, returned home yesterday afternoon.
During a two-week program that saw China and Italy collaborate “to make Chinese tourists feel safe,” Sa, together with his three colleagues from China, worked alongside Italian patrol officers every day to combat crime.
“I feel proud to have worked in a foreign country as a policeman to protect and serve not only my fellow countrymen but also people from other countries,” said Sa.
The 34-year-old Shanghai native is a policeman at the Pudong International Airport and has been doing the job for nearly a decade.
Having been schooled in Italy at a young age. he speaks Italian well.
Being one of only a handful of police officers in China who can speak Italian, Sa was sent on a four-month training program in Beijing last September for his mission overseas, which started on May 2.
Wearing a Chinese police uniform and sunglasses, and carrying a flashlight, a bottle of water, a notebook and a pen, Sa, did not look much different from the Italian officers — except for the fact that he was unarmed.
“Some Chinese tourists came up to me and when they found out that I was really a policeman from China, asked to take pictures with me,” he said.
Sa said he was confident that police cooperation with Italy will continue in the future: “When I was in Italy, many Italian people told me that they welcomed our presence in their country and hoped we will return someday.”
