Tomb time
The annual dongzhi festival coincides with the winter solstice, which in the northern hemisphere falls between December 21 and 23. It also marks the longest night of the year and the shortest day.
The festival itself is a time for families to gather together to remember their ancestors, and in northern China, the annual event is marked by the consumption of lots of dumplings.
As a time for paying respects to the dead, dongzhi is similar to the Qingming Festival, though its scale is smaller.
Qingming, which dates backs hundreds of years, is celebrated annually on April 4 or 5, and is a time for families to visit cemeteries and sweep the tombs of deceased ancestors.
Between March 29 and April 7 this year, about 8.3 million people visited cemeteries across the city, an increase of 11.5 percent on the equivalent period of 2013.
