Too hot to fix giant thermometer
Officials said the giant thermometer at the former World Expo site isn’t working because it was hit by lightning in July and it is hard for maintenance workers to repair it in such hot weather.
The 165-meter-high thermometer, renovated from an old industrial chimney, was a popular sight at the Expo and remained in use after the event ended in October 2010.
After the thermometer stopped, speculation mounted that the government didn’t want people to know the true temperature.
Shanghai World Expo (Group) official Shan Qi said once it cools down workers will be sent up to repair the damage.
He added the thermometer’s control box was struck by lightning and that’s why it isn’t working.
