Tough penalties in store for over-packaged goods

CITY legislators are planning to legalize punishments of up to 100,000 yuan (US$15,656) against each commodity seller who stock goods deemed over-packaged according to future compulsory standards.
The local law is due to take effect soon. For an absence in national legislation in this regard, Shanghai will become the first city in the Chinese mainland to curb unnecessary packaging trends through cash penalties.
The local draft regulation on commodity packaging standards and rules for the city market was discussed today. Lawmakers all agreed on adopting fines to effectively curb a growing over-packing trend, which is environmental unfriendly and creates extra pressure on the city's limited garbage treatment capacity.
