Tougher rules on cloned taxis
OWNERS and drivers of cloned taxis face losing their licenses and criminal detention under new rules set by local traffic authorities.
The Shanghai Public Security Bureau and the Shanghai Transport and Port Administration agreed to introduce the harsher punishments in a bid to crack down on the use of illegal, or cloned, taxis, which use fake plates and false certificates to fool passengers and the authorities. Under previous rules, drivers of such cabs could have all their license points deducted and their vehicles confiscated. They also faced a fine of up to 50,000 yuan (US$8,240) for running an illegitimate business. The authorities hope the new punishments will be a more powerful deterrent.
