Traffic chaos expected amid road, Metro construction works

MAJOR road and Metro line construction and repair works are being carried out this year that is likely to affect vehicular traffic, a report released on Friday by Shanghai Urban-Rural Construction and Transportation Development Research Institute said.

Some of the projects are in downtown, including the construction of Metro Line 14, the main body of Beiheng Passage, a major east-west thoroughfare, renovation project on Wuning Road and an underground passage project on Zhongshan Road S., including the renovation of ramps on Nanpu Bridge.

The construction of Tianmu Overpass, in particular, is expected to have a big impact on the operation of South-North Elevated Road.

The report said the driving speed on the city’s elevated ways is expected to be lower than 40 kilometers per hour during morning rush hours and the driving speed during peak hours is expected to be lower than 15 kilometers per hour.

The report also said that in 2016, the traffic flow during rush hours had improved after the crack down on traffic violations.

Last year, on an average, the city’s Metro saw 9.29 million trips made by commuters per day, accounting for 51 percent of the city’s passenger transportation traffic. But use of other modes of public transports likes buses and taxis saw a steady decline.

The city’s buses ferried some 6.54 million passengers a day on average, down by 6 percent than last year, though the driving speed of buses increased by 10 percent during rush hours thanks to bus-only lanes. Meanwhile, the daily taxi traffic dropped by 11 percent to 2.36 million trips by passengers. The total number of taxis in Shanghai also declined by 4.7 percent to 46,600.
