Train crash tot walking again

THE toddler who survived the fatal bullet train crash in Wenzhou, Zhejiang Province, on July 23, walked again yesterday, but doctors are not optimistic that her left leg will completely recover.
Doctors at Shanghai's Xinhua Hospital removed stitches from 34-month-old Xiang Weiyi's left leg yesterday.
With the help of a brace, Xiang walked for several minutes. The toddler said she was happy not to have to lie in bed all day any longer.
The hospital said anti-infection treatment had worked well. Before coming to Xinhua in August, there had been fears the toddler would lose her leg through infection.
"She has undoubtedly taken a new step in her life," said Xiang Yuyu, her uncle.
Doctors, however, said the nerve of her left leg will require intensive treatment.
"The nerve still has no reaction," said Du Qing, a doctor with the hospital.
Now treatment will focus on rehabilitation, doctors said. The hospital has designed a detailed plan to improve the joint motion, nerve repair and muscle strength.
"The plan will help her to regain feeling and motion," Du said.
Xiang was found 21 hours after the train crash that killed 40 people and left nearly 200 injured. The child's parents died in the crash.
