Transport poll to get rolling on Sunday
DON’T be surprised if someone knocks on your door this weekend and asks you how you normally get to work, as your reply might help to shape the city’s transport system over the coming decades.
The city government is planning to survey more than 300,000 people about public transport to help it formulate its urban plan through 2040.
“We need to know the current situation before we launch any new measures,” said Li Junhao, an official with the Shanghai Transport Commission.
The study, which starts on Sunday and will take several months to complete, will involve 75,000 households, as well as car owners and people using airports, railway stations, long-distance bus terminals and Metro stations. They will be polled on their commuting habits, opinions on the city’s transport facilities, such as car parks and bus-only lanes, and other things.
Digital equipment like tablet computers will be used instead of the traditional questionnaire papers.
A report will be handed to the city government and unveiled to public next year.
Shanghai has carried out four large-scale transport polls since 1986, with the most recent being in 2009.
