Travel agency to pay for Maldives tragedy
A LOCAL travel agency has been ordered to pay 270,000 yuan (US$43,298) as compensation after a family on holiday in Maldives drowned in the sea.
The couple and their underage daughter had bought a tour package for 38,000 yuan from the agency in 2010. But tragedy stuck when the couple was swept away by waves while swimming in the sea. Their daughter was brought back to China by her relatives.
In May 2013, the parents of the couple sued the agency and demanded 2.4 million yuan as compensation. But the agency said the package included only flight tickets and hotel services. The court ruled that a travel agency was responsible for a customer’s safety once a contract is signed and they should warn them about all dangers.
