Travel website leaves tourists in lurch
TOURISM authorities are investigating an online travel operator that shut down for several days, leaving customers who had paid for trips in the lurch.
Anxious customers gathered outside Maidou.com’s office on Tianmu Rd W. yesterday to demand answers.
A woman surnamed Yang who bought six package holidays to Osaka scheduled in June was very worried.
She submitted six passports to the company so it could process visa applications.
“Last week, I called the website to ask about the visa applications, and was told workers were having a rest, which made me nervous,” Yang said.
She rushed to the office on Friday, and was greeted by staff. However, the website stopped operating soon after Yang left, according to a security guard at the scene.
“My passport is missing, which is driving me mad,” said Yang.
On the door of the office, a note said Maidou.com did not "flee," but had moved to a different — but undiclosed — address.
It asked customers to register on its website and wait for a response.
An official with the Shanghai Tourism Quality Supervision Center surnamed Zhu said the center had received a large number of complaints about the website. It ordered the Jing’an Tourism Administration to contact the company’s customers and work out solutions.
Zhou Xiang, CEO of Maidou.com, told Shanghai Television that the website had had financial difficulties, but said it will resume operating on Monday.
Zhou promised to issue refunds to customers and compensate those who missed flights.
