Trio given jail terms for selling expired drugs

Three people who repackaged and sold expired medicines worth over 186,000 yuan (US$29,388) pleaded guilty yesterday in the Hongkou District People's Court.
The court sentenced Sun Gang and Sun Xiaoping, brothers from Anhui Province, to one year and 15 months in prison respectively for selling expired drugs. The third convict, Li Jianfang, was jailed for six months with a one-year reprieve.
Prosecutors said the Sun brothers bought expired medicines from local residents at a low price and put them in new packages with new usage labels they collected from hospitals between December 2010 and last August.
Sun Xiaoping admitted to using a printer to change the production date, batch number and expiration date on the packages. The expired medicines were then sold to street drug dealers at higher prices, the court heard.
The three were apprehended on August 23 last year and police seized 86 kinds of medicines and 4,196 drug packages in their home.
