Trio jailed for kidnapping woman at Carrefour

THE man who kidnapped a woman in a Mercedes in the parking lot of the Carrefour Supermarket in Gubei has been sentenced to 13 years in jail, Changning District People's Court said yesterday.

The man, surnamed Dong, demanded 6 million yuan (US$900,901) in ransom to cover his company's debts.

The victim, who suffered a stab wound to her waist, was saved in time after her family reported to police.

Dong's two accomplices were sentenced to six years and 14 1/2 years in prison. The verdict has been upheld by the No. 1 Intermediate People's Court, judges said.

Dong, 28, owned a computer trading company before the kidnapping. His hard work brought him good business and the company expanded from five workers to about 80. But the global recession hit Dong's business at the end of 2008. His company ran a deficit of more than 1 million yuan by April 2009.

To pay debts, Dong hatched the kidnapping plot in June 2009. He first searched kidnapping information on the Internet and concluded he must have helpers, he told the court.

Dong then asked his former classmate surnamed Wang to help. A Karaoke bar waitress surnamed Zhang also joined since the duo thought a woman would provide a better cover, the court heard.

The three people scouted a few downtown places first and decided to target single women who park cars at the supermarket.

On the afternoon of August 27, 2009, Dong drove his Chevrolet to the Carrefour parking lot with Wang and Zhang. When a middle-aged woman, surnamed Ma, opened the door of her white Mercedes after shopping, she was kidnapped by the trio. Wang stabbed her waist when the victim resisted.

Dong snatched 18,000 yuan in cash from Ma's bag and called her husband to demand 6 million yuan in ransom. Wang took the victim to an apartment Dong rented on Gonghexin Road.

Ma's husband called police who captured Dong and Zhang early next morning. Following the address provided by Dong, police soon caught Wang and rescued the hostage.
Dong got a lighter punishment since he helped police arrest Wang. Wang got a 14 1/2-year jail term for kidnapping and assault, while Zhang got a six-year sentence.
