Truck driver arrested 19 years after fatal accident

A truck driver who fled after killing a woman in a traffic accident in Shanghai 19 years ago has been arrested after years of being hunted and finally tracked down over the internet, police said yesterday.
Chen Bangqing, who was 25 in 1997, knocked down Ling Xiuzhen who was riding her bike in the wrong lane the crossroads of Pudong Road N. and Caogao Branch Road on November 12 and fled Shanghai for fear of being punished.
Police said when they arrived at the scene after receiving a call from a passer-by, Chen had already abandoned his truck and disappeared.
Chen’s identity was determined three days after, but police failed to find him in his hometown in Anhui Province.
Zhang Ming, a police officer in Pudong who dealt with the case back then, said his colleagues had made several trips to Chen’s hometown over the years and had never given up the effort to track him down.
Police said they started to hunt him over the internet this year and with the help of Anhui police, finally trapped him in his hometown in August.
Chen, in an interview with Shanghai TV, expressed his remorse.
“All these years I have been troubled by nightmares,” he said. “I would rather die in her stead, rather than living with a bad conscience.”
Police told Shanghai Daily that Chen is now awaiting charges. Chen faces up to 10 years in prison.
Ling was survived by her husband, Xu, and their daughter who was a high school student at the time. Xu told Shanghai TV his daughter lost focus in school and didn’t get accepted into college.
“I hate the killer’s guts,” he said. “But I think at least my wife can finally rest her soul.”
