THE Shanghai Zoo is calling on residents not to keep alligator snapping turtles as growing numbers of people are asking the zoo to take the reptiles when they grow too big.
The alien species grows much faster than local turtle species and is a threat to the local environment. It is also sold to hotels and restaurants for food, the zoo said. Some owners who cannot manage the animals ask the zoo to take them, placing a burden on resources, said officials.
