Tutor arrested over sexual assaults on girl

A POSTGRADUATE student has been arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting a 12-year-old girl, Putuo District prosecutors said yesterday.
The man, surnamed Dong, was approached by the girl’s mother, who wanted to hire a private tutor for her daughter and saw Dong’s details on a website. Dong was attracted to the girl, prosecutors said. On May 12, knowing that the girl had a fever, Dong touched her neck and chest under the pretext of taking her temperature. He sexually assaulted the girl several times over the following three weeks, according to prosecutors. After being confronted by the girl’s mother, Dong handed himself in to police on June 24. Prosecutors said that although Dong and the girl didn’t have full sex, their privates touched, so Dong’s behavior can be deemed as rape. As the girl is a minor, prosecutors said Dong could be given a harsh punishment. Under China’s Criminal Law, someone convicted of rape can be jailed for between three and 10 years. The term can be longer if the victim is a minor.
