Two accused of stealing from temples
POLICE have arrested two migrant workers accused of stealing Buddhist donations from temples, Hongkou District prosecutors said yesterday.
The two are alleged to have been caught as a result of workers from Xiahai Temple finding a stick, with donated cash stuck around it, last October. The cash was reported to have come from the collection box.
Police were called and checked monitoring videos. They revealed the two men pretending to pray but never putting any money into the box, prosecutors said.
Some days later, the two returned to the temple, trying to get back their stick and the money on it, prosecutors said, adding that one was caught at the scene, while the other fled but was caught last month. The suspects told police that they had stolen about 200 yuan (US$29) from Xiahai Temple and about 800 yuan from another temple, prosecutors said, because they owed debts and lived a poor life.
