Two fake watch vendors end up in jail
TWO online vendors who sold counterfeit designer watches for more than 200,000 yuan (US$32,000) were sentenced to 24 months and 18 months in prison, the Yangpu District People's Court said today.
Wang Qiang and Wang Wei opened three stores on Taobao.com, China's largest online marketplace, in October 2010. They bought fake Tissot and Casio watches from a supplier surnamed Xie, who was tried separately, and sold the counterfeits via their online stores, the court heard.
Prosecutors said Wang Wei, Wang Qiang's elder sister, was responsible for negotiating prices with Xie and handling customer orders.
Between January and April of last year, the two earned more than 200,000 yuan from selling fake watches. Police seized over 400 bogus Tissot, Casio, Longines and Omega watches at their home.
The pair has returned 20,000 yuan of their ill-gotten money and was fined 35,000 yuan by the court.
