Three postgraduates of Donghua University injured in campus lab blast

THREE college students were injured, including two seriously, in a lab blast on the Songjiang District campus of Donghua University today. 

The explosion took place in one of the labs of the college’s chemical and biological engineering institute. 

The school authority confirmed in the afternoon that the blast took place at 10:30am when three of its postgraduate students were in the middle of a chemical experiment in the lab. One student suffered minor bruises while the other two were still being treated at hospital and were out of life danger at present.

Both the victims have been rushed to Ruijin Hospital. The hospital said they were treating two postgraduates from Donghua university and both were males, aged 23 and 24. Doctors said chemicals including potassium permanganate causes injuries to their faces and eyes. They were both in stable condition and were being treated at ICU of the Burn and Plastic Surgery Department.

The cause of the accident is still being investigated. The school authority has ordered all of its colleges to carry out thorough safety check over all their labs.
