Two-year reprieve for wife who paid to have husband killed

A WOMAN who spent 200,000 yuan (US$29,630) hiring two killers to murder her husband was sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve yesterday.

Chen Liwei, 39, told the Shanghai No. 1 Intermediate People's Court that she had long been a victim of domestic violence.

Tang Jianhua, one of the two killers, was sentenced to death and Cao Shangfeng, the other killer, was jailed for 15 years. Dou Mingjun, who introduced the two to Chen, was jailed for 10 years.

Chen, a Zhejiang Province native, said she had always quarreled with her husband, Pan Dachang, and suffered from domestic violence.

She decided to kill her husband and asked for help from Dou Mingjun, a business partner. Dou introduced her to Tang, a Heilongjiang Province native.

Chen promised to pay 200,000 yuan and Tang asked Cao to help.

The pair tried to kill Pan twice early this year but failed. On February 11, they followed him to his construction materials store. Tang hit him on the head with a wooden stick and Cao injected him with a syringe containing narcotics.

Pan died from a brain injury.
