UK prep schools try to woo local families
AS many Chinese families are sending their children abroad at a young age, parents now turn their eyes to preparatory schools.
At an event held in Shanghai on Friday by BE Education Group with four British prep schools to introduce their admission policies and to interview Chinese applicants, the youngest visitor was only 6 year old. As British school only admit international students older than 9, some parents went to the event for early consultation when preparing children for overseas study.
A mother surnamed Liang brought his 12-year-old son to meet with admission officials as he applied for three of the schools.
“We’ve decided to let him study abroad in the future and he has been studying in a bilingual school in Shanghai,” she said. “But now we would like to send him abroad a little bit earlier to let him immerse in a pure environment of international education with international teachers and course and better prepare for overseas higher education.”
Another mother surnamed Yang said the family decided to send her son to a UK prep school at a younger age as he was disappointed with the insufficiency of PE classes and sports activities at local schools.
The mother also said she was attracted by the UK boarding schools when she visited some of them earlier as all students there seemed polite, gentle and confident.
“I think the boarding schools can teach him how to get along with others, respecting and encouraging each other,” she said. “And they would broaden his mind with various activities and schoolmates from different countries and cultural backgrounds.”
