US goods maker sues market selling fakes

American luxury goods manufacturer Coach Inc is suing a garment market operator in Luwan District for allowing stall holders to sell fake goods.

It is the second time Coach has sued markets in the city for selling fake goods since July.

Coach, best known for its leather bags and accessories, is seeking 500,000 yuan (US$73,200) compensation from Shanghai Longhua Garment and Accessory Market Managing Co Ltd.

Coach, which registered its trademark on the Chinese mainland in 1999, found that several stall holders in the Longhua market were selling fake items with the Coach trademark.

The company has contacted the operator to stop the infringement but still found fakes sold in the market a month later and decided to sue the operator.

The Luwan District People's Court has accepted the lawsuit. On July 14, the manufacturer sued Shanghai Xingwang International Garment City Managing Co Ltd in Qipu Road for the same reason and the same compensation.
