US$6.6m theft earns life in jail
THE former general manager of a state-owned construction supervision company in Shanghai was sentenced to life in prison yesterday by the Shanghai No.2 Intermediate People's Court for embezzling more than 42 million yuan (US$6.6 million).
Sitting in a wheelchair, Wu Xiaoli, 74, was taken to court accompanied by a doctor. Wu told the court she was able to stay and listen to the verdict when the judge questioned about her health.
The court said Wu was the general manager of Shanghai Gongxin Project Construction Supervision Center Ltd from 1994 to 2010. She embezzled public money when the state-owned company was changed into a private enterprise between August 2009 and May 2010.
