Ukrainian dancer wins top ballet prize

UKRAINIAN dancer Olexander Omelchenko was awarded the Grand Prix prize at the 5th Shanghai International Ballet Competition.

He was presented with the prize at an awards ceremony and gala last night at the Shanghai Grand Theater.

Graduating from the Belarussian State Ballet School in 2011 and the Moscow State Academy of Choreography in 2012, Omelchenko became first soloist at Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Moscow Music Theater.

The gold awards in the junior division went to Chinese dancers Yu Hang and Xu Jingkun, both from Shanghai Dance School.

Yu, a 17-year-old ballerina who has been studying at Shanghai Dance School since age 10, also competed in the prestigious Prix de Lausanne international dance competition in February and won the gold prize as well as the Adveq scholarship to study at the Royal Ballet School.

The gold awards for the senior division went to Chinese dancers Qi Bingxue and Yuan Anpu. The biennial Shanghai International Ballet Competition returned to the Shanghai Grand Theater this summer after a nine-year hiatus.

Next year’s competition will be held at the Shanghai Dance Center in Changning, the new home of the Shanghai Ballet, the Shanghai Dance Theater and the Shanghai Dance School from this fall.
