Uni and health firm to join up for imaging

THE Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Shanghai United Imaging Healthcare Co plan to set up an imaging institute, coordinating their research and resources.

The institute will focus on MRIs, CTs and molecular imaging. It will also cooperate with the Shanghai Synchrotron Radiation Facility to develop devices for cancer radiation treatment.

“For a very long time, China has been importing advanced medical devices for imaging from three foreign companies — General Electric, Philips and Siemens,” aid Xu Xuemin, vice president of Jiao Tong.

“Due to the lack of competitors from China, the costs to patients are very high,” Xu said. “This will be greatly reduced with locally developed technology.”

Institute director Du Yiping said apart from cutting costs, domestically developed technology would be easier to deploy to remote areas.

“We will integrate technologies, big data and artificial intelligence to help doctors identify diseases,” Du said. He said the institute will recruit 75 experts and support staff from abroad.
