Urban body to police errant cabbies
THE city government has roped in the urban management office to monitor some of the popular spots in Shanghai for violations by taxi drivers.
It has identified 32 places in downtown Puxi where taxis have been known to cherry-pick passengers or black taxis overcharging them, authorities said.
The city’s traffic enforcement body has only 16 teams with less than 300 officers, making it difficult for them to cover the entire city.
The urban management authority, on the other hand, has about 3,000 officials in downtown, and can cover the areas, Liu Dongmei, an official with the authority, said yesterday.
Liu said they were now receiving training from the traffic enforcement team, including on enforcement procedures and case studies.
The 32 areas include business areas and tourist sites such as Xintiandi, Huaihai Road, Jing’an Temple and Zhongshan Park. They will be on the look out for violators from January 15.
Citizens are also being urged to call hotline 12319 if they encounter violations or spot others being left out. The platform will assign two officers to look into the complaint immediately.
Complaints about taxis cherry-picking long-distance passengers have been known to exist for a while, but it reportedly was worse on New Year’s Eve.
Almost all taxi drivers demanded at least 200 yuan for a ride to or from Xintiandi — the only place to have a countdown in the city, thepaper.cn reported late last week.
