Van driver killed by bus going wrong way

A VAN driver was killed yesterday when a bus traveling in the wrong direction along Yixian Elevated Road ploughed into his vehicle, police said.

The incident happened about 5am as the No. 952 bus was en route from its depot at Baoyang Dock in Baoshan District to its terminus at People’s Square.

There was very little traffic on the road due to the early hour, and the bus had traveled about 8 kilometers on the wrong side of the road before hitting the van, police said.

An official from Shanghai No. 5 Bus Co told Shanghai Daily he had no idea why the 48-year-old driver acted in the way he did.

“We’re all astonished,” he said, on condition of anonymity.

“He (the driver) has been with the company for 25 years and had a completely clean driving record.”

The driver, who has not been named, has been put under criminal detention, police said.

“The conductor told the driver that he had made a mistake as soon as he drove on to the wrong side of the road, but he ignored her and kept going,” the official said.

“He could have easily exited the elevated road and changed to the right lane, but he didn’t. It’s very strange,” he said.

Neither the bus driver nor the conductor were hurt in the collision, but a second person traveling in the van, which was carrying vegetables, suffered minor injuries, police said.
