Vandalized Mobike pulled from river
THE maritime authority has recovered one of three rental bikes that had been chucked into the Huangpu River just over a week ago.
A man had been seen smashing the six Mobike rentals on October 24 and throwing three of them into the river from the Bund. Mobike staff rushed to the spot on Zhongshan Road E1, but the man managed to escape.
He was later arrested by police.
Huangpu District Maritime Bureau sent patrol boats to the area to recover the bikes because of safety fears for traffic on the busy river.
The bike was pulled from the river on Monday by a salvage boat. Mobike staff said the bike, including its identity recognition chip, was not damaged and it would be returned to service.
The bureau said the other bikes could not be found and might have been carried too far away by the strong currents.
Police said the suspect, surnamed Su, had vandalized the bikes because he considered the bike rental scheme to be “dangerous” as it reveals personal information.
