Vendor selling toxic salt arrested in Songjiang

A VENDOR who sold more than 3 tons of industrial salt disguised as edible salt was arrested for producing and selling toxic food, prosecutors in Songjiang District said yesterday.

Another person who mixed the industrial salt in the paprika and sold them has also been arrested.

The 56-year-old vendor, surnamed Lu, discovered the price of edible salt was higher than industrial salt and that many people couldn’t distinguish between the two. He bought 3 tons of industrial salt from a company in Minhang District in April for 360 yuan (US$57) per ton and then repackaged them using fake packets of popular branded edible salt.

These packets of “edible salt” were later sold at prices lower than the market price. After selling the 3 tons of “edible salt,” Lu went back three more times to the company to buy more industrial salt.

Lu was detained by police on August 7. Officers seized 14 bags of industrial salt, weighing about 700 kilograms, and 60kgs of repackaged “edible salt” from his residence.

Lu also told them that he sold some of the industrial salt to a man surnamed Guan, who admitted he bought 250kgs of industrial salt for use in paprika manufacturing. He managed to sell 50kgs of the paprika mixed with industrial salt to others.
