Very valuable village
ONE of the wealthiest villages in China will be represented at this year’s World Expo in Milan, its top official said yesterday.
The success story of Yonglian in east China’s Jiangsu Province, which last year generated 35.8 billion yuan (US$5.8 billion) in revenue, will be told within the China Pavilion, Party chief Wu Dongcai told a press conference.
The village had just 200 farmers in 1970, but following a program of integration with neighboring communities and the expansion of its industrial capabilities, it’s now home to more than 10,000 people and generates about 1.8 billion yuan a year in tax revenue.
