Veteran security guard halted knifeman

A 50-YEAR-OLD security guard in Minhang District is being put forward for a bravery award after stopping a man who was holding up a woman at knifepoint.

Security guard Xu Zhengjiang said he was suspicious of the man he saw lurking outside the residential complex on Weiye Road where he worked, at around midnight last Thursday.

He saw him follow a young woman for about 50 meters, stop and threaten her with a knife before snatching her bag.

When Xu rushed over the man dropped the bag and fled but the guard followed on a bicycle.

When he caught up with the man, Xu used the bike’s handlebars to fend off knife thrusts and subdued his attacker before alerting police.

Xu said he served as an armed police officer for four years in Nanjing, capital of Jiangsu Province, in the 1980s and had also trained security guards for 20 years.

“I can still have the upper hand if I fight three to four people, even though I’m 50,” Xu said.

He said he didn’t give his own safety a thought when he rushed to the woman’s assistance.

Police in Minhang are now putting Xu forward for bravery award.

A 22-year-old man was held in connection with the incident.
