Village market to get major rework
A MARKET area in Minhang District that is popular for its wide range of home decoration products is to undergo a major program of redevelopment, a senior local official said yesterday.
Jiuxing Village Market in Qibao Town has long drawn people looking for paint, wallpaper, laminate flooring and all manner of other things to make their homes beautiful. However, its popularity and prosperity have also attracted a lot of unauthorized vendors and illegal buildings to house them, Qian Guoping, the head of the Qibao government, told a press conference.
Since its opening in 1998, the commercial area has been a huge lure for “out-of-towners in search of a fortune,” but their arrival has been a major contributor to its degradation, the official said.
Many of the illegal “shophouses” erected by unlicensed traders are not only unsightly, but also potential fire hazards, he said.
In the interests of the local environment and out of concern for people’s safety, the town government has therefore taken the decision to raze the entire site — which comprises numerous legal and illegal structures — and redevelop it as a contemporary commercial center, Qian said.
Registered vendors, of which there are more than 9,600, have been informed of the plans and the government is hoping to persuade the first of them to move out within the next three months, he said.
Cash and other incentives will be offered to those willing to pack up and leave, he said.
Qian did not say when the new market will open for business, but said its primary focus will remain home decoration.
As well as any returning traders, the local government hopes to attract several major name brands from China and overseas, he said, without elaborating.
