Volunteers to boost firefighter numbers

MORE work and volunteer fire crews are to be trained to tackle a shortage of city firefighters, officials said yesterday.
Due to the city’s rapid development, Shanghai’s 7,200 professional firefighters are stretched too thin to cope with the number of incidents, said Gu Jinlong, deputy director of the Shanghai Fire Department.
The department has employed another 2,000 to meet the manpower shortage, said Gu, ahead of the new Regulations on Shanghai Social Fire Fighting Organizations that come into effect on November 1.
And 5,000 people have been hired by 190 governmental agencies and enterprises as private full-time firefighters.
Numbers are also bolstered by 10,000 volunteers organized as rescuers should fire incidents occur in companies, neighborhood committee and other social organizations.
Another 2,000 people are promoting fire prevention knowledge, checking fire prevention facilities and helping with the aftermath of incidents in towns and villages.
“The social fire fighting forces are expected to support professional firefighters in protecting public security and properties, as well as enhance public awareness of fire prevention,” said Gu.
