Waiter stole 124 bottles of Moutai
A local waiter was sentenced to five years in prison and fined 5,000 yuan (US$785) yesterday for embezzling 124 bottles of Moutai, a famous Chinese liquor brand, from a local hotel, the Pudong New Area People's Court ruled.
Prosecutors said the convict, surnamed Wang, 31, faked the daily sales report and took 124 bottles of Moutai liquor worth 156,240 yuan from the hotel from December 2010 to last December. Wang drank some of them and sold the rest at 400 yuan to 700 yuan per bottle, while the market value is normally 1,500 yuan. Wang earned a profit of more than 50,000 yuan, the court heard.
Wang said he found the hotel had such lax management that a waiter could get the liquor without anyone's approval.
