Warehouse that secretly released ammonia into sewers shut down
AMMONIA surreptitiously released into the sewers in the city’s Yangpu District yesterday was found to come from a refrigerated storage warehouse on Junpuju Road after the penetrating smell disturbed residents, officials said.
The city’s fire department, police, work safety supervision and environmental protection authorities rushed to the spot to handle the emergency.
Residents living nearby said they smelled the irritating odor in the morning and suspected that the warehouse discharged liquid ammonia directly into the sewer. They called the police.
The warehouse did not have proper permits and was ordered to close, according to the district’s work safety supervision authorities. The warehouse may have discharged the ammonia illegally to save money, officials said.
Authorities said they will further examine the discharged liquid and recover remaining toxic fluids. No residents were injured and the environment wasn’t significantly impacted, authorities announced.
