Warning to 鈥11.11鈥 visitors
CHECKS on luggage are being stepped up on visitors arriving by train in the city for today’s November 11 Singles Day shopping event, also known as ‘‘11.11,” railway police said yesterday.
They are searching for anything illegal being brought in by passengers.
On Tuesday, a passenger surnamed Zhao was found bringing in three boxes of gold accessories on arrival at Hongqiao Railway Station.
Zhao turned out to be the owner of a gold store in Nanjing and was allowed to continue his journey after producing evidence that the objects were bought for promotional sales for the “11.11” shopping bonanza.
On Wednesday, a passenger surnamed Li was stopped at Hongqiao Railway Station after one of his luggage boxes was found to be full of banknotes.
Li said he knew nothing about what was inside the luggage as it had been entrusted to him by a friend. The cash totaled 1 million yuan (US$147,000), which Li’s friend said he had prepared for his son to buy a new apartment during the “11.11” event, police said.
Police warned passengers to bring evidence about the origin of “huge amounts of valuable objects” with them.
