Watchdog to keep eye on lenses
CONTACT lenses will face close scrutiny after faring badly in quality assessments last year, the Shanghai Food and Drug Administration said yesterday.
In tests carried out on 5,021 batches of medical apparatus and instruments, more than 10 percent failed to meet the quality standards, of which a large number were contact lenses, it said.
Problems included misleading specifications, incomplete warning messages, mismatched pairs and the presence of bacteria.
Fading color in cosmetic lenses was also a problem.
Industry expert Zhu Qingji said only lenses that have color mixed into the core material do not fade. But some manufacturers simply insert a colored film between two lenses and these are prone to separate, he said.
