Water pipe bursts, flooding area and cutting water service

AN old underground water pipe burst in the wee hours this morning, creating a hole as big as two square meters on Qingyun Road near Dongbaoxing Road in Zhabei District, flooding the area and cutting off tap water to residents, according to xinmin.cn.
Hundreds of residents were affected by the crack, which occurred at about 2:30am. Water shot up to two meters high and four meters wide. Flooding in the area, which included nearby roads, reached as deep as 20 centimeters, the report said.
Repair workers shut valves and the water subsided at about 7:30am. Water service resumed to affected homes. Workers said the cause of the accident was that the pipe was aged.
