WeChat scam victim repays firm
A woman has resigned and reimbursed her company 20,000 yuan (US$2,900) after being caught up as a victim in a 100,000 yuan WeChat scam.
Pudong New Area People’s Court said yesterday the woman, a company cashier surnamed Qiu, was contacted on WeChat by someone claiming to be her manager. In March last year, she transferred 100,000 yuan to a “client’s” account at the request of her “manager.”
She had been invited to join a group, which she believed was real because other scammers impersonated her colleagues, using real profile photos.
The scam was uncovered when she went into her manager’s office to confirm the transaction. The company is still hunting the scammers, but decided to take action against Qiu instead.
