Website faces 12 million yuan copyright lawsuit

A popular film and music Website, www.verycd.com, has been sued for copyright infringement and was asked for nearly 12 million yuan (US$1.77 million) in compensation for offering unauthorized free download of the film "Ip Man 2."

Shanghai No. 1 Intermediate People's Court has accepted the lawsuit.

Desen International Media Co Ltd that owns the copyright of the film said it only authorized the China Film Copyright Association to have the right to allow others to spread the film on the Internet in the Chinese mainland.

The Website of verycd presented a download recommendation of the film on May 4, only five days later than the debut of the film. Users can download the film free of charge with the software on the Website, according to the lawsuit.

Desen said the box office revenues had dropped sharply since the unauthorized download appeared.
The copyright association also accused that the Website's behavior has decreased the value of its right to spread the film on the Internet.

The two plaintiffs requested the Website to make a public apology, hand out the original version of the pirated film and compensate with 11.95 million yuan.
