Wesbite fined for making false claims about deals

A WEBSITE that exaggerated the size of the discounts it offered on mobile phones and electrical appliances has been fined for false advertising, the market watchdog said yesterday.

In a series of promotions staged since last June, Yixun.com claimed to offer discounts of 1,000 yuan (US$160) on smartphones and up to 70 percent on appliances, the Shanghai Industrial and Commercial Administrative Bureau said.

However, the majority of the offers were spurious, it said, adding that the actual discount on a phone priced at 1,799 was actually just 100 yuan.

The promotional activity boosted the company’s sales figures by more than 500,000 yuan, the bureau said, though it declined to say how much Yixun had been fined.

The company has been ordered to stop running misleading promotions, it said.

The number of complaints about online retailers in 2014 rose 88 percent year on year to a record 38,488, the bureau said.

The most common grievances regarded substandard products and poor after-sales service.

Meanwhile, Shanghai Huamei Medical Cosmetology Hospital was fined for claiming it was affiliated to a famous Shanghai hospital specializing in cosmetology, the bureau said.
