‘White goat rustler’ held by police

A MAN has been has been held in connection with the theft of 12 of Chongming Island’s famous white goats, police said yesterday.

The 27-year-old suspect, surnamed Duan, is said to have stolen the goats from farmers in Xinhe, Shuxin, Jianshe, Gangyan and Miaozhen towns.

It is claimed that he snatched the animals in broad daylight, escaping on a motorized tricycle.

Chongming white goats are famous for being especially tasty and both the animals and their meat command high prices.

Duan lives in Xinhe Town and is a goat farmer.

The stolen goats have been returned to their owners, said police.
