Wider ban on rooftop ads in city

SHANGHAI has banned rooftop advertisements inside the Middle Ring Road after the city’s authorities unveiled a revised version of outdoor advertisement facility installation layout yesterday.

The ban also applies to historical and cultural areas, the Huangpu River from Wusongkou to Xupu Bridge, the key area of the Hongqiao business area, areas within 100 meters along Suzhou Creek, Yan’an Elevated Road, and key areas inside the Shanghai International Tourism and Resorts Zone, according to the revised layout.

The revised layout also bans outdoor advertisements in the Bund historical and cultural areas (excluding the Nanjing Rd E. shopping street), and some areas along the Huangpu River and Suzhou Creek.

Existing outdoor advertisements can stay until their contracts end, authorities said.

Electronic display advertisements which affect traffic safety are also banned, and the brightness of these ads should be controlled, according to the revised layout.

The ban on high column advertisements has been expanded to the suburb ring road from the outer ring road in the previous version. The ban also covers expressways and Chongming District.

More than 1,700 illegal outdoor advertisement billboards were dismantled by the end of last year, including 810 in areas around the Yan’an, South North and Inner Ring Road elevated roads, according to the Shanghai Greenery and Public Sanitation Bureau.
