Woman, 53, arrested for slaying and robbing elderly neighbor

A woman has been arrested on charges of murdering her 86-year-old neighbor who lived alone and robbing her possessions in February in Putuo District.
Initial investigation showed the suspect surnamed Xu, 53, was a cold-blooded killer who went back to the victim's home, opening the door with a key, to search for the victim's necklace after she had killed her and escaped with her possessions, Putuo District prosecutors said.
Police will make further investigation after Xu was arrested. The officers said the killing "was brutal" but declined to give further details of the murder scene.
Xu was caught one month after the crime and some stolen items have been recovered, police said.
The case has astonished the public, especially the neighbors because Xu did not flee the scene after murdering the elderly woman surnamed Yang. She was among the crowd of onlookers and calmly eating an apple as policemen arrived on February 25.
Yang's daughter and son-in-law found the woman dead. Her body was lying in the corridor leading to the kitchen in her third-floor apartment on Baiyu Road, police said.
Witnesses said blood was "splattered all over the kitchen and the room."
Xu was caught while playing cards. She told police that she tricked Yang into opening the door on February 24 and took her bank card and other things.
Neighbors said Xu rented an apartment on the second floor of the building.
