Woman banned in court for swallowing evidence
A woman who swallowed an IOU slip, part of the evidence, in court was banned from acting on behalf of the defendant by the Huangpu District People's Court today.
On July 29, the 55-year-old woman, Wei Jing went to court on behalf of her ex-husband who was involved in a loan case. When the judge was checking the evidence before the court, Wei quickly took the slip from the judge, put it in her mouth and swallowed it with water before any one could stop her.
The IOU slip she swallowed was produced in court as evidence. Her ex-husband had signed it to borrow 30,000 yuan (US$ 4,392), a golden necklace and a pendant.
The woman was given a judicial detention of 15 days and was released yesterday.
The Huangpu District People's Court did not give her criminal sanctions as Wei has already realized her mistake. However, the judge banned her from being the legal representative as she doesn't have enough basic knowledge of law.
Wei's ex-husband Gao Jianping so far has not responded to the summons for his loan case and hasn't shown up.
"The swallowed evidence will not influence the case because we already had the copy," said Wu Jianbo, the judge. "It was so childish and ignorant for the woman to do that."
Wei said she would attend the court as an observer when the loan case is heard another day.
