Woman eats proof during court hearing
A WOMAN who ate an IOU slip in a hearing was detained for 15 days and deprived of the right to act on behalf of the defendant in the case by Huangpu District People's Court.
On July 29, Wei Jing, 55, went to court on behalf of her ex-husband who was involved in a loan case. As a judge checked evidence, Wei took the IOU slip from the judge, put it in her mouth and swallowed it before anyone could stop her.
"It is so childish for the women to do such a thing," said Judge Wu Jianbo. "The swallowed evidence will not influence the case because we had already made a copy."
The IOU was used to show her ex-husband signed to borrow 30,000 yuan (US$4,390), a gold necklace and a pendant.
Huangpu District People's Court did not pursue criminal sanctions since Wei admitted her mistake. However, the judge decided not to permit her to be the legal representative in the case due to her poor knowledge of the law.
Wei was released yesterday.
