Woman gets 11 years in prison for strangling newborn daughter

A woman who strangled her newborn daughter to death shortly after delivery was sentenced to 11 years in prison for murder, Pudong New Area People’s Court said today.
The woman surnamed Lu, 21, a Guizhou Province native, had fallen in love with a schoolmate in her hometown before she came to Shanghai looking for work last year, the court heard.
On March 14, she felt ill when she was working in a restaurant in the Pudong New Area and asked for leave. She then went to a restroom in the building and gave birth to a baby girl, the court heard.
She feared her parents and others would find out about the baby and used a hair band to strangle her daughter to death. Lu left her daughter’s body in a nearby rubbish bin, according to the court.
