‘Woman in white’ held by police

POLICE have held a woman in connection with a spate of thefts, following an appeal for information on a mysterious “woman in white.”

The young woman, whose name was not revealed, is suspected of stealing mobile phones from shopping malls, boutiques and hair salons over the past few months.

Shanghai police said last night on their Weibo microblog that she is a suspect in the “woman in white” thefts.

She was held at East Xujing Station on Metro Line 2 yesterday morning. According to reports, the woman held was wearing a white dress.

On Tuesday, police called on the public to report any information on a suspect dubbed “the woman in white” — baiyi nuzi in Chinese.

This came after an online post featuring surveillance camera footage appearing to show the same woman in a white dress stealing several phones went viral.

It included thefts from stores at the former Expo site in the Pudong New Area, and Xintiandi.

Officers said that investigations are continuing.
