‘Woman killed by spurned suitor’

A MAN has been arrested for allegedly stabbing to death a young woman who had for two years refused to go on a date with him, prosecutors in the Pudong New Area said yesterday.

The 33-year-old accused, surnamed Liu, killed the 23-year-old woman, surnamed Tian, and injured her mother, surnamed Wang, who had tried to defend her daughter, said prosecutors.

Prosecutors said that Liu, originally from central China’s Hunan Province had been pestering Tian for a date for two years, but she repeatedly turned him down.

On May 16, he followed Tian and her mother as they walked home and knocked them over with his moped, it is claimed.

Liu produced a knife and stabbed Tian repeatedly, then followed her into a store where she sought shelter and killed her, said prosecutors.

Wang told prosecutors how she tried to save her daughter and how no one came to her aid.

“I tried to hold him to keep them apart but I failed. He kept stabbing my daughter insanely.”

“I begged the people surrounding us to save her but no one helped.”

Prosecutors said that after killing Tian, Liu targeted Wang and stabbed her several times before fleeing on his moped.

Tian was pronounced dead at the scene.

Liu was held by police the next day and is said to have confessed.

He is said to have told police that “I love her and spent lots of money on her, at least 10,000 yuan (US$1,580).”
