Woman ‘lures models to be prostitutes’
A 23-YEAR-OLD woman lured would-be models to the city with promises of fame, only for them to find that they were expected to work as prostitutes, prosecutors said yesterday.
The woman, whose name was not released, has been charged with procuring others into prostitution, prosecutors said. If convicted, she could be jailed for up to five years.
According to prosecutors, the woman began relationship with an unemployed man, surnamed Zhang, and was told by him that they could make easy money from prostitution.
Last year, the woman helped post ads on the WeChat instant messaging platform, it is claimed.
These sought contestants for a “Miss Etiquette” contest, aspiring actresses for walk-on parts in movies and models for commercial events in Shanghai, said prosecutors.
The pair came to Shanghai last November and booked rooms in a hotel to meet young women from all over the country who had been attracted by the ads, it is claimed.
There the couple introduced the women to potential customers they had also arranged, and persuaded some of the women to become prostitutes, said prosecutors.
Prices ranged from 3,000 yuan (US$483) to 10,000 yuan.
On November 19, the woman and Zhang were held by police.
Zhang has been convicted in connection with the case.
